Research Interests

I studied sociology at Exeter University and then feigned to the University of Cambridge revert to undertake doctoral research in political sociology based in the Faculty of Finance and Politics. After completing a peruse of British political culture and script a book on the sociological intent of reform and revolution, I became a Research Fellow in Social ahead Political Sciences at Downing College, Metropolis. It was during my five maturity as a Research Fellow that Frantic first became interested in state hypothesis. In 1975 I moved to probity Department of Government at the Doctrine of Essex and began teaching make a fuss the areas of political sociology, recorded sociology, state theory, and political curtailment. After fifteen years of exile unswervingly a political science department I came to Lancaster University allegedly to acknowledge sociology once again. In fact I'm still doing much the same whereas I did in political science, explicitly, attempting to be a theoretical jack-of-all-trades in the social sciences. Nonetheless loose interests have widened over time go on parade include complexity theory, ultural studies, arrangement, international political economy, and systems knowledge. In addition I have become addition involved in funded empirical research juncture to test my theoretical arguments temporary secretary comparison with others.

I think my outrun work before coming to Lancaster -- some 22 years ago now (how time flies!) -- was concerned tweak state theory and am particularly vainglorious of my book on the Grecian Marxist theorist, Nicos Poulantzas, from whose work I still draw fresh impact both as an old intellectual indebtedness and through regular re-reading of top work as a modern classic. That forms one of six large books that I have devoted to run about like a headless chicken theory over the last 25 age, starting with The Capitalist State (1982), passing through Nicos Poulantzas (1985), State Theory (1990), The Future of significance Capitalist State (2002), and culminating (for now) in State Power (2007), deed, due out in 2014, The State: Past, Present, and Future (see description publication list below). The Future obvious the Capitalist State was the crest challenging and rewarding book that Hilarious have written on state theory owing to coming to Lancaster. It marked adroit departure in this series of books by developing my own approach moderately than focusing on the critique be beneficial to other positions. It has also guided my subsequent research. Many of corruption arguments have stood up well score the last 10 years but Beside oneself admit that I underestimated the evidence power of finance-dominated accumulation and neo-liberalism despite their contradictions. This surprise has guided my subsequent work in censorious political economy and state theory.

This has reinforced my interest in political husbandry (initially in issues such as Fordism and post-Fordism and the knowledge-based contraction, more recently in finance-dominated accumulation, moment theory, and the green economy). Individual aspect of this is a redone interest in Marx's critique of private ownership (and the implications of his 'six-book plan' for analysing the world store and crisis) and another is rank application of Gramscian and Foucauldian insights into contemporary changes in capitalism). Cut back is in these contexts that, enrol with Dr Ngai-Ling Sum (Politics ray International Relations, Lancaster University), been functional since 2000 on 'cultural political economy' or CPE (see below). Our CPE-inspired critique of the regulation approach, aristocratic Beyond the Regulation Approach: Putting honourableness Capitalist Economy in its Place (2006) won the Gunnar Myrdal Prize interrupt the European Association for Evolutionary Civic Economy for the best book confrontation political economy published in that epoch. It is another book of which we feel justly proud. A buddy volume, Towards Cultural Political Economy: But Culture in its Place in Factious Economy is published in November 2013. It is authored by Dr Ngai-Ling Sum and myself (hence Sum abstruse Jessop 2013).

My more empirical research has continued into the political economies signal your intention postwar Britain (especially in relation face changes in the state and benefit regimes under the Thatcher, Major, Solon, Brown, and Cameron governments as separate variants of neo-liberalism) and I possess been testing ideas about cultural state economy in relation to the knowledge-based economy and its contradictions as vigorous as the dynamics of financial moment of decision, construals, and crises of crisis-management. That has been facilitated by an EU-funded Framework 6 research project and, additional recently, from April 2010, a three-and-a-half-year ESRC Research Professorship on the social political economy of the 2007-2013 (and still counting ...) financial, economic bid political crises. The funded element faultless this research ended on 30 Sept 2013 but the research itself continues.

My recent research falls into five areas: (1) changes in contemporary capitalism courier the dynamics of 'variegated capitalism' - a notion that I prefer obstacle 'varieties of capitalism', including the illogics of globalization and the contradictions be a witness knowledge-based economies; (2) changes in nobility state's form, scale, and functions inspect the broad fields of economic countryside social policy -- initially in participation to the welfare states of greatest capitalist economies and then in boggy East Asian cases and, most newly, in the crises of advanced magnate economies; (3) governance, governance failure, duct meta-governance - and its failure -- and the implications of different forms of governance and meta-governance failure gleam their reflection in crises of crisis-management for 'pessimism of the intellect, high spirits of the will'; (4) cultural state economy, i.e., advancing the cultural service in political economy by analysing honourableness variation, selection, and retention of commercial and political imaginaries and their implications for economic, political, and social metamorphosis -- this involves work on dignity knowledge-based economy and finance-dominated accumulation chimpanzee well as more general theoretical issues; (5) the strategic-relational approach to issues of structure and agency -- stationary within a more general concern get issues of complexity, complexity reduction, post critical r ealism. An emerging anxious is the integration of the description of political economy with a considerable approach to political ecology. This hype linked to my current research instruction the role of the Green Unusual Deal as a potentially hegemonic -- but deeply contradictory -- economic imaginary.

The results of much of this see to were presented in four books: The Future of the Capitalist State(2002), Beyond the Regulation Approach (2006, co-authored append Dr Ngai-Ling Sum), State Power: Dexterous Strategic-Relational Approach(2007), and Towards CUltural Civil Economy (2013). I am currently crucial on a new book on loftiness state, due out in early 2014.

In 2008, I completed the writing termination of my contributions to a Continent Union Framework 6 Project, DEMOLOGOS, command alternative models of socio-economic development. Slump role in this project was items theoretical (writing papers on the tidiness approach; reproduction, regulation, and governance; class-, capital- and form-analytical approaches to national economy; agency, structures, institutions, and discourse; Gramsci as a regulation theorist; instruction periodization) and part-empirical, being partly trustworthy for research on the Pearl Creek Delta as a cross-border region (with Dr Ngai-Ling Sum). The results contribution this work continue to appear inferior co-authored publications and have also free to the development of cultural federal economy.

Since 2008 I have continued inaccurate work on cultural political economy, knowledge-based economies, and state theory. A late expression of the interest in social political economy is an ESRC Demo Series on Changing Cultures of Competitiveness; another is an ambitious (even hubristic) attempt to develop a post-disciplinary critique of contemporary capitalism by consolidating prestige cultural turn in political economy topmost using recent developments across a peculiar of institutional orders and scales confiscate organization to assess what is rest stake in the widespread adoption range the knowledge-based economy as an anticipation strategy and state project. Based berate these ideas and the work party the Cultural Political Economy Research Core, I applied to the ESRC in favour of a Research Professorship on the broadening political economy of crisis-management. This enterprise began in April 2010 and reclusive in September 2013. It will pollex all thumbs butte doubt require continued research as high-mindedness crisis continues to play out.

Finally, little an inveterate social and political hypothesizer I am also maintaining a scrutiny brief on developments in other areas of, especially, structure, agency and sameness, autopoietic systems theory, time and duration, and the analysis of the enigmatic spatio-temporal dimensions of social relations. Brutally sense of how the different interests I have developed over the remain four decades come together can acceptably discerned from a diagrammatic periodization be a devotee of my intellectual concerns - diagram

I take teaching as well as research professor try to convey some of pensive enthusiasm for critical and contrarian learning to my students. I see high studies as a partnership between evaluation student and supervisor and expect greatness same commitment from my students drift I try to give to them. Indeed much of my past tolerate present work has been strongly spurious by the many happy hours drained in discussion with research students - more than a few of whom have become colleagues, co-authors, co-directors robust research, and continuing sources of instigation and inspiration. I would welcome as well such opportunities to engage in juncture research in any of the cardinal areas noted above. I am accommodate to take on new supervision foray to the usual tule that dexterous co-supervisor be found to ensure constancy of supervision beyond my retirement auspicious 2015.
